WVU allowing people to go without masks outdoors

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — West Virginia University has announced the lifting of some coronavirus restrictions for fully vaccinated individuals.

People who have received the coronavirus vaccine will no longer have to wear facial coverings in outdoor settings on all West Virginia University campuses. Face masks will still be required indoors unless in a group of 10 people or fewer.

Individuals qualify as fully vaccinated after two weeks of the single Johnson & Johnson vaccine dose or two weeks after the second dose of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine.

“We expect those who have not been vaccinated to wear a mask where we require it,” said Rob Alsop, the institution’s vice president of strategic initiatives. “We’re not going to have throngs of police officers or people out there asking for your card. We’re going to use the honor system on these things.”

West Virginia University will also not require testing and five days of quarantine for certain individuals beginning June 1. Students and faculty traveling internationally are expected to get tested within five days after their arrival. Unvaccinated individuals are discouraged from international travel.

The institution, through a partnership with the Monongalia County Health Department, will offer free coronavirus testing twice a week at the Student Rec Center during the summer.
