MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — Mayor Harriet Johnson is hospitalized after suffering an undisclosed medical emergency.

The City of Martinsburg released a statement Tuesday afternoon confirming the hospitalization but said it had no additional information to provide other than that the mayor was taken to a local hospital Sunday and then transported to INOVA Fairfax in Virginia where the statement says she is “currently being treated and evaluated.”
Martinsburg City Council plans to discuss how the mayor’s duties and responsibilities can be handled during her recovery at their regularly scheduled meeting this Thursday.
In the meantime, the statement says “the routine business and operations of the City of Martinsburg continue.”
The statement expresses hope that the community will keep Mayor Johnson and her husband Tom in their thoughts and prayers.
Johnson was elected the first female mayor of Martinsburg last summer. She was a former member of city council.
“Being on council for four years, I understood how things do work in our city,” Johnson told MetroNews after last year’s election. “I’m very much involved in the whole city and the community. I will always reach out and be there for the people. That’s why I have to thank the voters and the volunteers that believed in me. I am so excited.”
