Week #4 Brings SSAC Rankings and Big Time Games!

Is this possible?  Week #4 in the 2021 high school football season is already here which means we are very close to the halfway point of the year!  And, as we enter week #4, it has certainly been a trying season for a lot of the teams around the Mountain State.  Take for example the Richwood LumberJacks – they have yet to play a game this season and that trend will continue this week as the LumberJacks are not scheduled to hit the gridiron until Tuesday, September 21st when they travel to Webster County.  So, while everyone else will be gearing up for week #5, Richwood will still be looking for game #1.

Now as mentioned, the first set of rankings from the WVSSAC will be out this week and as teams start looking at where they fall in that list of top 16 teams, we find we enter week number four with 21 teams that are still undefeated and 17 teams that are still looking for win number one.  And as you might expect the schedule this week is filled with important games for a lot of teams around the state.

Up first in Class AAA, the early battle for king of the hill will take place in the Kanawha Valley as undefeated Huntington (3-0) will travel to Charleston to battle the undefeated Patriots of George Washington (3-0)!  Huntington High has been very impressive in the first three games getting by Parkersburg, Hurricane and Cabell Midland and outscoring their opponents by an average of 35-8!  For the Patriots, their three wins have come over St. Albans, Paul Blazer of Ashland, Ky and Hurricane.  The Patriots have been outscoring their opponents at a clip of 39-11!  The only common opponent between the two teams is Hurricane where Huntington prevailed 38-0 and George Washington won 35-14.  The Highlanders win over the Redskins came on the road while George Washington defeated Hurricane at home.  If you’re in the Kanawha Valley vicinity this Friday night, this game would be worth buying a ticket for!

In Class AA, the top game features a very good Fairmont Senior team traveling to an always powerful Class AAA team in Bridgeport.  This week, the Polar Bears (2-1) begin an unbelievably tough four game stretch as they begin this week at Bridgeport…..next week at University…….then a trip to Wheeling Park and they wrap up the gauntlet with a 191 mile trip to Spring Valley!!  In the big matchup this Friday night at Wayne Jaminson Field, it will be the 46th time these two powerful teams have met and Bridgeport has won 31 of the previous 45!

In Class A, the highlight game this weekend will find the (2-1) Bulldogs of Tygarts Valley traveling to Baker, WV to take on the undefeated (3-0) Cougars of East Hardy.  Tygarts Valley has outscored their first three opponents 106 to 30 and lost a heartbreaker in week two dropping a 16-14 game in Parsons to Tucker County.  For Head Coach Devin Orndorff, his Cougars of East Hardy have been rolling this season, outscoring their first three opponents by an average of 44-10.  East Hardy has won the last eight games against Tygarts Valley!

Don’t forget week #4 of High School GAMENIGHT begins at 9:30 this Friday night and you’re invited to join Dave Jecklin and me for all the scores of all the games plus interviews with play by play crews from across the state and we’ll also be talking with coaches and fans.  GAMENIGHT is heard across the state on over 40 great radio stations and the audio and video of the show is streamed at www.wvmetronews.com!

Talk with you this Friday night!
