Is This Really Week #7???

It is amazing to me how fast the high school football season goes by!  This week will constitute the 7th week of play for a lot of teams across the state and for me, that is so hard to believe!

However, the good news is of the 120 schools in WV that play high school football, only 32 have played 6 games…..so the season is over half finished for only 27% of high schools in the state.  Still, way too fast for me!  It is interesting to note how the numbers play out as far as games played in each class.  In Class AAA, of the 32 teams that play football, 15 have played at least six games.  In Class AA, only 9 schools of the 37 that play football in the middle division have completed six games and in Class A, the numbers vary even more with only 8 of the 41 teams having played six games!  Now some of this is scheduling on the part of the larger teams in the state, however we have noticed Covid has not affected the Class AAA schools nearly as much as those schools in Class AA and Class A!  I would certainly be hard pressed to give you a reason as to why this is the case, however I do know the numbers don’t lie!

So, as we move on to week #7 of the 11 week high school schedule there are several games we will be eager to see the final score on.  In Class A, the Mavericks of James Monroe (3-1) and winners of their last three games will travel to Charmco to battle the (4-1) Cavaliers of Greenbrier West…..the Mount View Golden Knights (3-1), who went on the road last Friday night and upset the (4-1) Sherman Tide, will this week travel to Van to battle the (3-1) Bulldogs who have won their last three games by a combined score of 104-34!  Also in Class A, the (5-1) Cee-Bees of Clay Battelle will try and keep their great season moving in the right direction as they travel 165 miles to Woodstock, Virginia to battle the Colonels of Massanutten Military Academy in a game that kicks off Friday afternoon at 3pm!

In Class AA, the Big Blacks of Point Pleasant (4-1) will hit the road early Friday morning to travel the 250 miles to take on the (3-1) Golden Tornado of Keyser.  Keyser was ranked #1 last week in Class AA but lost on the road to the Huskies of Northern Garrett, Md by a final of 34-19.  The week before, Frankfort, which was at that time ranked #1 in Class AA, also lost at Northern Garrett, Md. by a final of 28-6!  Scheduling note for Class AA teams….Do Not Schedule Northern Garrett!!!  Also coming up this week in Class AA, the Scott Skyhawks (4-1) will make the short trip to Logan to battle the rival Wildcats who have won 4 of their first 6 games…..and in another rivalry game, the undefeated (4-0) Cougars of Lincoln will make the short trip to Robert C. Byrd to battle the (2-2) Flying Eagles.  And of note in Class AA, the Bluefield Beavers will finally get their season back underway with a couple of games in eight days as they welcome Graham this Friday night to Mitchell Stadium and then Pikeview will pay a visit on Monday night, October 11th! Bluefield is currently (0-1) on the 2021 season!!

In Class AAA this weekend, the undefeated Martinsburg Bulldogs (6-0) will leave their school at 9am Friday morning to travel the 305 miles to Painesville, Ohio where on Saturday afternoon at 1pm, they will take on the (5-2) Beavers of Riverside High School!  And, think about this…..on week #10 of the regular season (October 29), Martinsburg will have to take an even longer trip to play a game, because on that Friday in late October, the Bulldogs will travel to Spring Valley in Huntington to battle the Timberwolves……that trip covers 360 miles!!  Another game of interest this Friday night will involve two teams needing a win as (1-2) Wheeling Park will pay a visit to Morgantown to take on the (2-3) Mohigans!  And another intriguing game will find the undefeated Cougars of Jefferson (6-0) playing host to the (4-1) Colonels of James Wood High School from Winchester, Va.

Week #7 of high school football will be exciting as there are great games scheduled all across the state and here’s an invitation for you to join Dave Jecklin and me for GAMENIGHT…..from 9:30 to Midnight on over 40 great radio stations around the state, plus the audio and video of GAMENIGHT can be found at www.wvmetronews.com!

Talk with you this Friday night!!
