Morgan County sheriff calls brush fire at Cacapon State Park ‘suspicious’

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. — Crews in Morgan County are working to put out what’s left of an overnight brush fire at Cacapon State Park that officials are calling “suspicious.”

“There shouldn’t have been anyone there and there wasn’t anything that should’ve caused that fire. Until you know the reason, you can’t say definitively, but it’s suspicious at best,” said Morgan County Sheriff KC Bohrer.

Cacapon State Park Superintendent Scott Fortney said flames appeared Thursday night on park grounds just north of the Gold Course Maintenance Shop.

“The fire was a little intense because of the winds, but we were able to contain it to 2.3 acres,” Fortney said on Friday’s MetroNews “Talkline.”

Fortney said wind gusts reached up to 18-20 miles per hour making it difficult to control.

“That was our biggest concern was breaking the fire line,” he said.

Crews were able to bring the fire down and contain it by 11 p.m. Thursday. There were still a couple of smolders as of Friday morning.

No structures were damaged and no one was hurt. The cause is under investigation.

“That is undetermined at this time,” Fortney said.

The Eastern Panhandle was under a Wind Advisory at the time of the fire.
