Marshall declares intention to leave Conference USA in June

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — The indefinite timeline for Marshall University’s departure from Conference USA now has some clarity. The University released a statement Friday saying that the Herd will leave CUSA on June 30, 2022.

Marshall announced their plans on October 30 to join the Sun Belt Conference after a tumultuous round of realignment following the departures of Oklahoma and Texas from the Big 12 to the Southeastern Conference. Marshall is set to join Southern Mississippi, Old Dominion and James Madison as new members in the Sun Belt. Southern Mississippi and Old Dominion released similar statements Friday afternoon saying they will also leave CUSA in June. James Madison is moving up from the FCS level to join the Sun Belt.

When Marshall accepted a bid to join the Sun Belt, the Herd was originally scheduled to join the league no later than July 1, 2023.

Marshall’s statement did not specifically indicate if they will immediately join the Sun Belt for the 2022-2023 academic year.  The statement did say that efforts to reach an ‘amicable resolution to this matter’ with Conference USA have failed.
