CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A former Logan police officer was sentenced Thursday to nine years in prison and three years of supervised release after using excessive force on an arrested person.
A federal jury convicted 45-year-old Everett Maynard in November of using excessive force against an arrestee.
According to officials, Maynard assaulted the victim in the bathroom of the Logan Police Department before dragging the man into another room. Maynard rammed the man’s head against the doorframe.
The act left the victim unconscious and suffering from a broken shoulder, a broken nose and a cut to his head that required staples to close.
“While the defendant assaulted the victim, the defendant berated the victim for ‘making demands’ of him by, among other things, asking to go to the bathroom,” the Department of Justice said in a release.
The agency also noted Maynard bragged about the use of force as the victim was unconscious in a pool of his own blood.
“This defendant’s abuse of law enforcement authority inside a police station was egregious and caused serious injuries,” Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke said. “Police misconduct undermines community trust in law enforcement, and impedes effective policing. This sentence confirms that law enforcement officers who use excessive force against arrestees will be held accountable.”
The FBI investigated the case with support from the West Virginia State Police.
