CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Both active COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations rose slightly on Friday, according to the state Department and Health and Human Resources (DHHR).
The agency’s dashboard showed active cases at 544 Friday, up from 500 on Thursday and the highest total in more than a month. Active cases total fell to as low as 263 on April 4.
COVID-19 hospitalizations sit at 86 with 21 patients in the ICU and 10 on a vent. Hospitalizations were at 78 on Thursday which was the lowest total since mid-July 2021.
One COVID-19 death was confirmed Friday, a 93-year-old male from Mason County. The statewide death total is now 6,823.
“As we send sympathies to this family, I urge everyone in West Virginia to do their part to stop the spread of this virus and prevent further loss of life,” said Bill J. Crouch, DHHR Cabinet Secretary in a statement. “Please schedule your COVID-19 vaccine or booster shot today.”

53 of West Virginia’s 55 counties are green on the COVID-19 alert map, meaning the lowest rate of transmission. Marshall and Calhoun counties are yellow.
DHHR reports as of April 22, 2022, there are currently 544 active COVID-19 cases statewide. There has been one death reported since the last report, with a total of 6,823 deaths attributed to COVID-19.
