Newest Supreme Court justice sworn in

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The newest justice of the Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia was sworn in Wednesday.

C. Haley Bunn

C. Haley Bunn, a former federal prosecutor, took the oath in a private ceremony. A public ceremony will take place on May 12 in the Supreme Court’s chambers in Charleston.

Gov. Jim Justice earlier this month appointed Bunn to fill a vacancy created by Evan Jenkins’ departure.

Bunn is a Wyoming County native. She worked as an assistant U.S. attorney for the Southern District of West Virginia’s criminal division from 2012 to 2019, in which Bunn primarily focused on cases involving drug distributors. The U.S. Department of Justice appointed her to an Opioid Fraud and Abuse Detection Unit in 2017.

Bunn worked in private practices from 2010 to 2012 and between 2019 and her appointment to the bench.

Bunn’s first day considering a legal case will be Tuesday. The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear cases at Braxton County Board of Education meeting room.
