CHARLESTON, W.Va. — West Virginia is one COVID-19 related death away from reaching 7,000 in total during the pandemic.
The state Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) confirmed one COVID-19 death in Friday’s report, to bring the total to 6,999. DHHR has confirmed the death of a 67-year old female from McDowell Coun
“We are deeply saddened to report the death of another West Virginian due to COVID-19,” said Bill J. Crouch, DHHR Cabinet Secretary in a release. “As we extend our sympathies to this family, we must do everything we can to stop the pandemic including getting vaccinated and boosted.”
The agency also confirmed 2,198 active cases of the virus in the state on Friday, nearly the same as Thursday.

208 hospitalizations were reported Friday by the DHHR, a continuing rise throughout the week. Hospitalizations were nearly in the 70s in mid-April. 35 COVID-19 patients are in the ICU in West Virginia.
