Halfway Mark Coming Up – Still 25 Teams Undefeated!

I know, we say it every year, but the high school football season is really flying by!  It almost seems impossible, but after play this weekend, more than half of the teams that play high school football in WV will have played five of their allotted ten games!

And, as we near the half way point of the season, we still have 25 teams that are undefeated.  There are 5 teams in Class AAA……7 in Class AA….and 13 in Class A.  How do those numbers compare to the number of teams that are still looking for their first win of the 2022 season?  In Class AAA, we have 6 teams that are still looking for win #1….in Class AA, there are currently 9 teams in search of win #1….and in Class A, there are 11 teams that are still winless.  So, that means the number of undefeated teams is almost identical to the number of winless teams….25 to 26!

As we enter into play this weekend, here are a few games to keep an eye on….

In Class AAA, Parkersburg (2-1) will try an rebound from their loss last week to Parkersburg South (3-0) as they travel to Ona to battle the (2-1) Knights of Cabell Midland.  Cabell Midland has won their last two games after opening with a 28-21 loss at George Washington.  Robert C. Byrd, a Class AA team with a (2-2) record will try and keep their ship on course as they travel to Class AAA Bridgeport (3-1).  The undefeated Princeton Tigers (3-0) are coming off an overtime win over Oak Hill last Friday night and they know they will have their hands full with the (3-1) Cavaliers of Lord Botetourt from Daleville, Va.  Also in Class AAA, Hedgesville (3-1) will make an all important trip to Morgantown to battle the (3-1) Mohigans and, the Big Reds of Steubenville will bring their undefeated (5-0) record to Wheeling to take on the (3-1) Patriots of Wheeling Park.

In Class AA this weekend, Independence(4-0) will travel to Wyoming County to battle the (1-3) Renegades of Westside……….Lincoln and North Marion will square off against one another this Friday night in Rachel, as the (2-1) Cougars travel  to battle the (4-0) Huskies.  One of the better rivalry games in the state will find the (3-1) Tigers of Chapmanville making the short drive to Madison to battle the undefeated (4-0) Skyhawks of Scott.

In Class A, this weekend shapes up really nice with a number of great games readied to be played.  Tyler Consolidated is (3-1) on the season and in their short series with Cameron, the Silver Knights are (2-1).  Cameron comes into the game undefeated.  Moorefield is starting to play better football and currently have their season record (2-2).  The Yellow Jackets will host the undefeated Petersburg Vikings this Friday night in a series that has seen these two teams meet 91 times over the years with Moorefield winning 65, including 12 of the last 14!  Also in Class A this weekend, the Panthers of Tug Valley will travel to Hurley, Va to battle a team that is red hot this year and now sitting at 3-1 after losing the first game of the season.  Tug Valley has had their way with Hurley over the years, winning 7 of their first 9 games played between these two clubs.

Be sure and join Dave Jecklin and me this Friday night for GAMENIGHT as we will have all the scores of all the games played this weekend in WV!  The show is available on 48 radio stations all across the state and the live audio and video of the program can be seen and heard at www.wvmetronews.com!

Talk with you Friday night!
