Man in jail after shooting death, stand-off

PRINCETON, W.Va. — Mercer County authorities said a Virginia man was arrested following a Friday night shooting that left a woman dead.

Mercer County deputies said John Norton, 28, also fired shots at police and barricaded himself in a residence on Maple Acres Road.

He was later arrested.

Deputies allege Norton shot and killed Jessica Smith, 40.

He’s charged with second degree murder, eight counts of wanton endangerment and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Norton is in the Southern Regional Jail in lieu of $200,000 bail.
