Tax deadline approaching with very few West Virginians left to file

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Less than a week now remains for those who haven’t yet to file their tax returns. The deadline to file is Tuesday, April 18.

Most West Virginians have already filed their returns, nearly 90%, according to West Virginia Tax Commissioner Matthew Irby.

“We’ve received close to 90% of returns already,” Irby said Thursday. “With the tax deadline coming up, we expect to receive that last wave of returns next week.”

Irby was appointed to be Tax Commissioner for the state by governor Jim Justice in June of 2021. He said most people should see refunds back within a month.

“For the average taxpayer, about 80%-85% of refunds, we pay out within about three weeks.”

As one last wave of taxpayers file their returns before the Tuesday deadline, also ramping up around this time of year are fraud schemes. Irby said they typically implement new tactics to combat this every year.

“We’re constantly trying to learn what it is they’re doing, so we institute new things pretty much every year,” said Irby. “Folks that are engaged in fraud continue to find new ways to try identity fraud.”

Individuals are now subject to lower tax rates on their income Beginning in the 2023 tax year, state residents will be subject to lower tax rates as a result from the income tax cuts signed during the legislative session. The rate changes do not affect this years personal income tax return filed for 2023. These rates will be on 2023 personal income tax returns filed next year.

Taxpayers will be also eligible to claim a credit on their 2024 state income tax return, filed in 2025, for all timely paid property taxes on vehicles in 2024.
