Senator Rand Paul to rally with Mooney in Huntington

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — U.S. Senate candidate and West Virginia Second District Congressman Alex Mooney says he’s hoping a Friday evening rally in Huntington will help get his name out to voters in the western part of the state.

“I’ve never represented Huntington so it’s a good way to introduce myself to the voters there,” Mooney told MetroNews Thursday.

Mooney, a Republican, plans to join U.S. Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) for the rally at the Guyandotte Veterans of Foreign Wars, 227 Main Street, Huntington, at 6 p.m. Friday.

Paul has endorsed Mooney in his run for the GOP nomination for U.S. Senate in 2024, which Mooney believes will help his campaign.

“Senator Paul certainly is a national figure. He’s obviously known for his adherence to the constitution, his expertise in medical issues. I think he’ll be a great draw,” Mooney said.

During the rally, Mooney plans to connect with Huntington voters and explain why he’s the better choice over his opponent Gov. Jim Justice.

“I’m for limited government. I’m for personal freedoms, not these COVID lockdowns that was happening across the country including our state for too long. There will be some serious contrast,” he said.

A new poll released by the West Virginia Chamber of Commerce Thursday showed Justice leading Mooney in a GOP primary for U.S. Senate 56 to 19 percent.

The chamber said Justice has universal name recognition in West Virginia, but Mooney told MetroNews Thursday he has the most conservative voting record.

“I’m going to urge the voters to look at my actual voting record and my defense of the constitution,” Mooney said. “I’m the only conservative running for the U.S. Senate, and I think West Virginians deserve a proven conservative as their U.S. Senator.”

The poll also showed a potentially tight GOP primary race for governor between state Attorney General Patrick Morrisey and Kanawha County Delegate Moore Capito.
