Speed enforcement campaign begins Friday on West Virginia roads

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — In a new effort to promote safety on West Virginia’s roads this summer, state and federal officials are teaming up to launch a speed enforcement campaign beginning Friday.

Jim Justice

The West Virginia Governor’s Highway Safety Program is partnering with the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) during a targeted high visibility enforcement period that runs through July 30.

Gov. Jim Justice said during his media briefing Wednesday the purpose of the campaign is to prevent speeding and distracted driving so that everyone can be safe on the roads.

“We are trying to make a real difference and save people’s lives. Slow down, watch what you’re doing and if you don’t slow down, we’re going to catch you and we’re going to write you up,” Justice said.

In 2021 alone, more than 12,000 people were killed in speeding-related crashes nationwide. That same year, 64 of those people died on West Virginia’s roads due to speed-related crashes.

Transportation officials said in a press release speed limits are set for clear, sunny weather and dry road conditions, but if roads are wet, snowy, or icy, drivers should reduce their speed. Officials went on to say speeding is a “selfish” choice.

“Much like impaired or distracted driving, speeding is a selfish choice that can have deadly consequences for the driver, other drivers, vehicle passengers, bicyclists, and pedestrians,” the release said.

Several factors have contributed to an overall rise in aggressive driving including traffic, running late, anonymity, or a disregard for others and for the law, according to the NHTSA.

Justice said drivers should also watch out for road workers. He said the state Department of Transportation works hard to repair roads and that drivers should respect that and follow the rules of the road.

“We can’t have great, new, quality highways that are in great condition if we don’t do the work,” he said.
