Former corrections officers charged for allegedly assaulting restrained inmate who later died

RALEIGH COUNTY, W.Va. — Two West Virginia correctional officers have been charged in connection to the death of an inmate at the Southern Regional Jail.

According to records from the U.S. District Court, Andrew Fleshman and Steven Nicholas Wimmer are accused of physically assaulting Quantez Burks at the jail in March of 2022. The officers allegedly assaulted Burks in retaliation. The officers claimed that Burks tried to push past another correctional officer to get out of a pod.

Fleshman and Wimmer are acussed of attacking Burks while he was restrained. Burks’ mother had claimed that her son died due to blunt force trauma.

The West Virginia Department of Homeland Security said the this is an active federal investigation.

Court records indicate that both men are expected to plead guilty at a future hearing.
