ARNOLDSBURG, W.Va. — The state Fire Marshal’s Office and the West Virginia State Police are investigating a deadly fire from over the weekend as a murder/suicide.
The blaze was reported Saturday afternoon at approximately 12:50 p.m. near Beech Road in the Arnoldsburg area of Calhoun County.
Flames were showing when firefighters from the Arnoldsburg Volunteer Fire Department arrived on scene.
State Police said the caller, identified as 74 year old Harvey Haerr, is believed to be the suspect. Troopers found Haerr deceased from an apparent gunshot wound outside of the burning residence.
On Sunday, October 15, members of the State Fire Marshals Office and the West Virginia State Police recovered human remains located in the debris of the residence. The remains are believed to be those of the suspect’s wife, Elizabeth Haerr, 62, and they were transported to the Medical Examiner’s Office for autopsy and to confirm the identification.
An investigation remains active and ongoing.
