Clay-Battelle takes Santa Series Holiday Tournament with win over Greenbrier West

BLACKSVILLE, W.Va. — Clay-Battelle put a bow on a busy month of December by winning their Santa Series Holiday Tournament on Saturday afternoon with a 79-50 victory over visiting Greenbrier West.

A day after defeating Morgantown Christian, 89-53 in the semifinals, the Cee-Bees led wire-to-wire against the Cavaliers (2-3) to collect their sixth victory of the season.

“Yesterday we started out slow. Today, it was one of our goals to come in, get up early and see what we could do,” said Clay-Battelle head coach Josh Kisner. “Starting out with a 12-0 run, we knew they were not a team to give up. They’re a fighting team, a good team and in the top ten. Our boys just put on a show today.”

Clay-Battelle led 19-7 after the first quarter and they extended that cushion to 49-23 at halftime. Colby Barr, newly-minted as a thousand-point scorer, led the Cee-Bees with 31 points. Fellow forward Preston Luzader added 26 points.

“Our big guys finished inside. When the outside shots weren’t falling, the big boys were in there to get the rebounds and put them back in for us.”

Clay-Battelle (6-2) has won six of their last seven games after falling to Trinity in their season opener. With three games scheduled next week, the Cee-Bees will reach the midway point of their regular season schedule in the opening four weeks of the season.

“The two games that we lost, we know why we lost and how we lost. We’re working to get better, taking care of the basketball, running the offense and finding our mismatches. We’re executing on offense and we keep playing our defense.”

Braydon McClung led the Cavaliers with 15 points. Greenbrier West advanced to the championship game by defeating Trinity, 64-63 in overtime on Friday. The Warriors defeated MCA, 52-49 in the third place game prior to the final.
