Capito says Trump’s comments about Senate border work premature

WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito said Friday on MetroNews “Talkline” work taking place on new border security measures mirror several Trump-era policies.

Trump has been critical in recent days of the negotiations saying the plan should be rejected

“I do not think we should do a Border Deal, at all, unless we get EVERYTHING needed to shut down the INVASION of Millions & Millions of people, many from parts unknown, into our once great, but soon to be great again, Country!,” Trump wrote on his social media platform.

Capito said Friday the comments are premature.

“I wouldn’t say that President Trump is wrong, I would say that where President Trump needs to look deeper is at the details at what we’ve looked at and how it’s very much like what he created under his administration,” Capitol told Talkline Host Hoppy Kercheval.

Capito said things like ‘remain in Mexico.’

“If you come in you can’t stay in this country you have to go back and wait in Mexico,” Capito said. “That’s a deterrent.”

Capito said the asylum claim for those who do come in will have a higher bar.

“You just won’t be catch and release into this country,” Capito said.

She added those who come into the U.S. won’t be paroled for 10 years while they are waiting for their claim.

“These are effective policies that really President Trump created during his administration,” Capito said.

Eight million people have come across the border since President Joe Biden was elected, a record 300,000 in December alone, Capito said.

“We are going to change the policies because the only way to force this president into any action is to change the law because he obviously wants an open border policy,” she said.

As for Trump and his comments, Capito said she hopes the former president takes a step back and looks closer at what’s being proposed.

“I wish he would hold off, then make his definitive statement once we see exactly what’s in here,” Capito said.
