GREENBRIER COUNTY, W.Va. — Major renovations are underway at the Anthony Correctional Center in Greenbrier County.
The West Virginia Division of Corrections and Rehabilitation (WVDCR) announced this week that the main building is being demolished and rebuilt. There’s also plans for a new Vocations building for welding and a new female housing unit.
According to WVDCR, demolition of the main building is halfway done, while construction on a new energy plant being built for Building B is around 85% done. A building for the kitchen and laundry is also being constructed. Included in the main building will be a medical facility, an education center, a culinary arts program, a state shop, an administrative office, a gym and an intake area.
Lynch Construction, a sub-contractor from White Sulpher Springs, is tasked with the demolition work. SQP is the general contractor.
Demolition started on Wednesday, March 6. Two phases of construction are being worked on at the same time with phase one having already started.
The project is being funded through six Capital Outlay fund accounts, including the annual general maintenance funds that WVDCR receives for projects. Governor Jim Justice requested additional funding be appropriated for the project during legislative sessions in 2018, 2020 and 2021. The Legislature approved the funding on each occasion.
The total amount budgeted for the project is $30 million.
Anthony Correctional Center has a total capacity of 112 for 32 female and 80 male offenders.
