Former deputy in Doddridge County sentenced for sexual abuse of child

WEST UNION, W.Va. — A former Doddridge County Sheriff’s deputy will spend no less than 10 years and 90 days in prison for sexually abusing a 15-year-old in 2020.

Andrew Menendez, 39, was sentenced Thursday in West Union by Judge Timothy Sweeney.

In January, Menendez was convicted of one count of sexual abuse by a parent, guardian or person of trust and one count of third degree sexual abuse. Menendez will serve 10-20 years for the sexual abuse by a guardian count and 90 days for the third degree sexual abuse count, as ruled by Judge Sweeney.

Menendez was also fined $5,500 and will be required to register as a sex offender.

Sweeney denied a request from Menendez’s defense for an alternative sentence such as probation or home confinement.

Menendez has already served 66 days which will go toward his sentence. It’s possible he will also have to pay restitution if the victim requests it upon Menendez’s release from prison.
