‘Honey in the Rock’ returns to Grandview theater Tuesday night

GRANDVIEW, W.Va. — Theater West Virginia is bringing back its production of “Honey in the Rock” Tuesday evening.

The performance begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Cliffside Ampitheater in Grandview.

Theater WV General Manager Gayle Oaks said they’ll draw a large crowd for the show on Thursday which is West Virginia Day. Tickets, which are free Thursday, are nearly sold out. Oaks said all people must do to attend that day is get online and reserve their seats.

“Honey in the Rock” first debuted on the Grandview stage in 1961. The Civil War drama showcases the story of how West Virginia became a state. The story is told through the perspective of a fictious family in the mid to late 1800s along with the breaking away from Virginia and the settling and development of new land.

“It’s a rendition of the telling of our founding of West Virginia, of how West Virginia eventually formed to become their own state,” Oaks said.

The performance features prominent historical figures such as Stonewall Jackson, soon-to-be president at the time, Andrew Johnson, and the first governor of West Virginia, Arthur Boreman.

Oaks said the return of the more than 60-year-old drama at Theater WV is huge in celebrating the state’s rich culture and heritage.

“It’s probably been 10+ years since I’ve seen ‘Honey in the Rock’ so to bring it back and to see these actors and actresses dancing, singing, the costumes, the vibrant colors and the rebuilding of sets just makes your heart happy,” she said.

Oaks said cast members spend hours preparing for the roles and are excited to showcase their talents this week.

“A lot of our cast are actually local and a lot of our casts have performed in these roles before or have been in the show in other roles before, so they know the shows,” she said.

Performances of “Hatfields and McCoys” will be held every other day with the first show this Wednesday night and then “Footloose” returns July 11.

Theater WV’s Summer 2024 performance schedule is as follows:

Honey in the Rock: June 18, 20, 22, 26, 28, and 30

Hatfields and McCoys: June 19, 21, 23, 25, 27, and 29
