West Virginia’s Sales Tax Holiday returns for back-to-school shoppers this weekend

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — West Virginia shoppers will be able to save on back-to-school supplies this weekend. The state’s Sales Tax Holiday runs from Friday to Monday.

There will be no sales tax on certain back-to-school items such as clothing, school supplies, instructional materials, laptops and tablets and sports equipment.

West Virginia Retailers Association President Bridget Lambert said it’s a great opportunity for consumers to shop in-person and save some money.

“I think that parents can expect some really good deals to be on the table,” she said. “I know that our stores are very excited to have a Sales Tax Holiday in West Virginia.”

Gov. Jim Justice said the average customer will save at least 6% on every qualified purchase and up to 7% if they purchase the item in a municipality that has imposed a local sales tax.

The following items are exempt from the state’s sales tax during the holiday:

  • Clothing and footwear — $125 or less
  • Computers and tablets — $500 or less
  • School instructional materials — $20 or less
  • School supplies — $50 or less
  • Sports equipment — $150 or less

Lambert said some families really need the financial help this time of year. The holiday also helps retailers prepare for the holiday season.

“It helps retailers this time of year because the summer is a slow season,” she said. “Having a Sales Tax Holiday helps both the families and the retail industry in West Virginia because we’re able to have the ability to reach out to parents and have something that can incentivize them to come into the actual store.”

Local malls, shopping centers and stores are also offering up deals and additional ways to save during the weekend.
