CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Hundreds of parents and students made their way to the WVRC building in Charleston Wednesday afternoon for 17th annual Backpack Attack, presented by 107.3 the Beat.
The effort handed out 300 backpacks to young students filled with all the school year essentials inside such as pens, pencils, paper, and other supplies to get ready for the school year.
David Cox, a parent in line to get school supplies for his children, said the giveaway was a big help.
“I think it’s awesome,” Cox said. “It’s a big help.”
Janilah Pittman, a middle school student in Charleston, says she’s looking forward to a couple things this school year.
“I’m excited about making new friends and getting good grades,” Pittman said Wednesday.
Pittman says she knows what will help her succeed in the classroom.
“Just paying attention to my work and listening to the teacher,” Pittman said.
Will Mullins, another student in line for the backpacks Wednesday, says he has one goal this year in school.
“Get a 4.0 (GPA),” Mullins said.
Mullins, as well as a few others in line, said the best part of their summer was going to the pool on a regular basis.
Pittman says being with friends and family was her highlight.
“I hung out with my friends this summer and my family members,” Pittman said.
Pittman and the rest of the students in Kanawha County will start their school year on Friday.
