Eleven more schools reclassified by WVSSAC for 2024 football season

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Three days after 11 schools were reclassified for the 2024 high school football season, 11 more schools will be making a similar move.

On Friday afternoon, the West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission announced the additional adjustments.

The Review Board, appointed by the West Virginia State Board of Education, reversed a prior decision by the WVSSAC Board of Directors and granted waivers to 11 schools that were involved in the appeal process related to the initial classification changes.

In addition to the order to grant the 11 waivers, the Review Board remanded further revisions to classifications based on cut scores for the 2024 football season with 11 additional schools being reclassified.

“We have been working diligently to work through the logistics and implications of the Board of Review’s mandate since Monday,’” said WVSSAC Executive Director David Price. “We’re now looking forward to getting competitions started here very soon.”

With Friday’s revisions, 16 teams remain in Class AAAA, the top classification. If the current postseason setup remains in place, each Class AAAA team would qualify for the playoffs.

These reclassifications only affect football teams and, as of now, only apply for the 2024 season.

On Tuesday, John Marshall, Oak Hill, Preston, St. Albans and Spring Valley moved from Class AAAA to Class AAA. Frankfort, Sissonville and Wayne moved from Class AAA to Class AA, while Petersburg, St. Marys and Tyler Consolidated shifted from Class AA to Class A.
