Berkeley County deputies investigate fatal shooting

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — Berkeley County sheriff’s deputies are investigating a fatal shooting that happened at the Economy Inn in Martinsburg Monday night.

Deputies said David Bennett, 65, of Inwood, died of a single gunshot wound to the chest. He was pronounced dead at Berkeley Medical Center.

Emergency dispatchers received a ‘shots fired’ call at around 8 p.m. Deputies rushed to the Economy Inn on Winchester Road.

Deputies have identified a second man, a 38-year-old from Martinsburg, in connection with the shooting but no charges have been filed.

The investigation will be completed and then turned over to the Berkeley County Prosecutors’ Office, the sheriff’s department said.
