Shooting near Martinsburg High injures 3 fans in stands

MARTINSBURG, W.Va, — Shots fired Friday night near the Martinsburg High football field  struck three fans.

Martinsburg Police Chief Erin Gibbons said their injuries were minor. Investigators do not believe the fans were targeted.

The shots actually came from outside the stadium near to the corner of Berry and Raleigh streets at just before 7 p.m. Gibbons said people were seen running from the scene after the shots were fired. A suspect has been identified. No arrests have been made.

One fan in the stands some 150 yards from the shooting suffered a non-life-threatening injury while two other fans were hit with shrapnel. Their wounds were superficial, Gibbons said.

Police working with school officials decided not to stop the game between Martinsburg and Huntington. Gibbons said they determined it would be safer to keep those at the game inside the secured area until things outside settled down.

The investigation remains active.
