INSTITUTE, W.Va. — West Virginia State University athletics has announced that its football game scheduled for 6 o’clock Thursday night against the Carson-Newman Eagles has been postponed after the murder of linebacker Jyilek Harrington.
A release was sent out Thursday afternoon saying the Yellow Jackets’ home opener will now be played Friday at noon.
Harrington, 21, from Charlotte, North Carolina, transferred to West Virginia State after playing for Carson-Newman. Harrington was murdered Wednesday night at around 8:30 on Charleston’s Regency Drive off Corridor G.
Both teams will hold a private vigil Thursday night in Harrington’s honor.
West Virginia State University says all online tickets sold will be accepted on Friday. Any ticket holders that cannot attend the game can contact the sports information office at the university to receive online credits that will be good for tickets to any other home football game in 2024.
