Remains found in Boone County confirmed as missing Kanawha County woman

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Human remains found in Boone County are now confirming the death of a Kanawha County woman who went missing over two years ago.

Deputies released new developments in an investigation late Wednesday morning that show the remains found were those of 26-year-old Alyssa Smith. Smith was reported missing in 2022.

The family of Smith was notified about the development, although there are still questions on the events leading up to Smith’s death.

The Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office worked with the West Virginia Fusion Center and Marshall University Forensic Laboratory to get the DNA testing on the remains found.

The Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office is also asking anyone with information surrounding the case to contact the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigative Section at 304-357-0556.
