Riley Moore receives Trump endorsement in race for Congress

Riley Moore has received an endorsement from former President Donald Trump in the congressional race to represent northern West Virginia counties.

Moore, a Republican, currently serves as state Treasurer. The Democratic candidate in the congressional race is Steve Wendelin, a Wardensville resident and U.S. Navy veteran.

They’re running to represent residents of the 2nd congressional district, which is generally the northern half of the state. Alex Mooney, a Charles Town resident, had represented the district but chose to run for Senate instead of for re-election to the U.S. House.

Riley Moore, who has been state Treasurer since 2021, is a former state delegate. He is the nephew of incumbent U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito and grandson of former West Virginia Gov. Arch Moore.

Trump wrote on social media that “Riley Moore is a tremendous American First Candidate running to represent the Wonderful People of West Virginia’s 2nd Congressional District.

“Riley is a Conservative Warrior who has incredible support from his Community. In Congress, Riley will work tirelessly to Grow the Economy, Lower Inflation, Uphold the Rule of Law, Secure our Border, Support our Incredible Military/Vets and Defend our always under siege Second Amendment.”

Trump has twice won West Virginia by wide margins.

In 2016, Trump got 68.5 percent of the general election vote in West Virginia, to Democrat Hillary Clinton’s 26.4 percent.

In 2020, Trump got 68.6 percent of West Virginia’s general election vote, to Biden’s 29.7 percent.

Trump is at the top of the political figures that West Virginians view most favorably, according to the most recent MetroNews West Virginia poll. Sixty percent view him favorably and 37% view him unfavorably.

“I am honored to have President Trump’s endorsement in my race for U.S. Congress. President Trump is a champion for the forgotten men and women of this country – speaking up for those who the political establishment has ignored for far too long. I look forward to working with President Trump in Congress to make America great again,” Moore said in a press release announcing the endorsement.
