Chad Scott to serve as Mountaineers’ interim head coach for bowl game

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — West Virginia will learn of its bowl game and opponent on Sunday.

The Mountaineers now know who will guide them through that process as Chad Scott has been named interim head coach, sources confirmed to MetroNews.

“I want to thank Coach Scott for agreeing to lead our team in bowl preparation. He has been a strong and great leader for our program, and someone who cares for our student-athletes,” WVU Vice President and Director of Athletics Wren Baker said. “I appreciate his willingness to step forward to make for as smooth of a transition as possible. I have confidence that Coach Scott will have our team prepared and ready to play.”

A part of the WVU coaching staff the last six seasons, Scott was hired in January 2019 shortly after Neal Brown became head coach.

Brown was fired Sunday after compiling a 37-35 mark over six seasons.

Scott was co-offensive coordinator/running backs coach his first three seasons with the Mountaineers. In 2022, Scott’s title changed to run game coordinator/running backs coach, and in the 2023 and 2024 seasons, Scott has served as offensive coordinator/running backs coach.

Brown, however, called offensive plays throughout the last two seasons.

Scott played at both Kentucky and North Carolina and earned his Bachelor’s Degree from UNC in 2004. He was a teammate of Brown’s in 2000 at UK.

Prior to joining the WVU staff, Scott had been hired to coach running backs at Louisville, but ultimately chose to take the position with the Mountaineers instead.

Scott was running backs coach at Troy (2007-09) and held the same title at Texas Tech (2010-12) and Kentucky (2013-15).

From 2016-18, Scott was in charge of tight ends/hybrids at UNC.

West Virginia’s last 1,000-yard rusher was Leddie Brown in 2021 when the tailback surpassed that mark for a second straight season.

Since then, the Mountaineers have had two running backs rush for more than 500 yards in three consecutive seasons — CJ Donaldson and Tony Mathis in 2022 and Donaldson and Jahiem White each of the last two seasons. White is 183 yards shy of 1,000 yards this season.
