MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — A GoFundMe fundraiser page has been set up for former WVU standout guard Marsalis Basey. The Martinsburg native recently suffered a hemorrhagic stroke while coaching a game.
Fundraising organizer Denise Williams says that Basey is facing serious medical challenges at the moment and without health insurance, the burden of doctor visits, tests, and treatments is becoming overwhelming. As of Tuesday afternoon, nearly $10,000 has been raised for Basey’s medical costs towards the goal of $100,000.
Basey has coached basketball at the college, high school and AAU levels in the eastern panhandle for several years. He played for the Mountaineers from 1991-1994. In four seasons at WVU, Basey played in 114 games, scoring 1,168 points. In his senior season, Basey posted a career-best scoring average of 16.2 points per game.
Tuesday night’s boys basketball game between Martinsburg and Jefferson has been dubbed “Basey Night” and fans are encouraged to wear gold and blue for the game in Shenandoah Junction.
