CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The West Virginia Department of Revenue is reporting that state revenue collections in February exceeded estimates by $33.7 million.
According to a release, the higher severance tax collections with cold weather-related natural gas prices served as the main reason for the results. The severance tax collections totaled $45.7 million, close to $17 million above the monthly estimate.
Personal income tax collections came in at $101.1 million, which was $20.7 million over projections.

State Revenue Secretary Eric Nelson, in a statement, said this is a step in the right direction.
“As we continue to address West Virginia’s financial challenges, I’m pleased to see revenue exceed expectations for February,” Nelson said. “We will continue to work with the Governor’s office and the Legislature to pass a balanced and forward-thinking 2026 budget that addresses these challenges.”
Consumer tax collections were the one area that fell below projections. February collections of nearly $143.1 million were $2.2 million below estimate.
