Tax return deadline approaching for state and federal taxes

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. –The tax deadline is quickly approaching and those at the West Virginia Tax Division are ready to start processing your refund.

Emily Cramer, assistant deputy commissioner of taxpayer engagement, said she couldn’t say how many people have already filed but they’re looking forward to the tax deadline.

“We’ve got a really good process and so we’re looking forward to Tuesday, April 15th,” Cramer said.

On the tax division website, they give tips on what to do to make filing for taxes easier for people. A couple of tips that they give is to make sure that you have the necessary documents like your SSN, Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, Adoption Taxpayer Identification Number, and Identity Protection Personal Identification Numbers valid for calendar year 2025 and make sure that you’re using a bank account, prepaid card, or mobile app in order to get your refund.

However, if taxpayers have any questions, they can go to their website at tax.wv.gov or email them at taxhelp@wv.gov.

Or, Cramer says that the staff with the tax division would also be able to help whether in person or over the phone.

“But also, our taxpayers service representatives are answering tons of calls on these exact kinds of questions every day, so they can call them from 8-5 during the week at 304-558-3333,” she said. “We have regional offices across the state if anyone wants to go in and ask any questions or they can even drop off their returns there.”

Cramer also wants residents to know that if they are looking to file an extension to push back when you need to file your returns, they can do so.

“If there’s anyone that feels their coming up close, they still need to pay their taxes by April 15, but they can file an extension request to wait until October 15 if they feel they need to,” she said.

She says that the division is always there to help whenever they are needed.

“This is a busy time of year and taxes can make people anxious, we’re always here to help anyway, any questions they may have,” Cramer said.
