WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. — A football player who recently transferred to West Liberty University was shot and killed on Mother’s Day morning in Melbourne, Florida.
According to Melbourne police, Nathaniel Jennings, 19, of Palm Bay, Florida died after suffering multiple gunshot wounds.
Police said the shooting came during an argument between Jennings and another man early Sunday morning in downtown Melbourne. The alleged shooter was taken into custody and charged with manslaughter. Reports said Stephan Dieujust is claiming self-defense.
Jennings played his first year of college football at the University of Northwestern – St. Paul, a Christian university located in Minnesota. He was an all-conference performer at defensive line. He transferred to West Liberty during the spring semester.
“We are heartbroken by the loss of one of our own,” Hilltoppers head coach Roger Waialae said in a statement from WLU. “Nate was more than just an athlete. He was a teammate, a friend, and a shining example of what a student athlete should be. His presence will forever be missed, but their spirit will always be part of our team. Our thoughts and prayers are with their family, friends, and all who loved them.”
WLU Director of Athletics Brad Forshey said Jennings left an impact on those around him.
“As we come together to mourn, we also honor his memory with the strength and unity that define us,” Forshey said.
West Liberty is offering counseling services to its students, faculty and staff.
