HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — During a recent Marshall University Board of Governors meeting, there was little in the way of updates on the search for a new Director of Athletics.
Current Director of Athletics Christian Spears spoke and delivered what could perhaps best be described as farewell remarks, while expressing appreciation for his three-plus years in Huntington.
Spears was informed in early May his contract will not be renewed when it expires in March 2026. The university has said a nationwide search in partnership with CarrSports Consultants is underway to find his replacement.
“Let me close with an enormous amount of gratitude,” Spears said. “I’ve significantly enjoyed the experience of serving as your Athletic Director over the last three years. The people we have come across, we’ve developed genuine relationships with the staff and coaches we have hired.
“This staff has hired 11 head coaches. That’s a special accomplishment. Thank you to the Board of Governors for the great decisions you have made with building a baseball stadium and hiring amazing coaches. We’ve appreciated our time here and wish the institution the best — peace and love.”
The Board of Governors was informed the Athletic Director search committee continues to evaluate candidate resumes. A list of finalists to bring on campus for interviews could be announced over the next month.
During the Board of Governors meeting, Spears also detailed how Marshall will handle the finalization of the recent House vs. NCAA lawsuit settlement, allowing schools to pay athletes directly.
While Marshall has a Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) program in operation — The Thunder Trust — the most noticeable effect on Thundering Herd athletics from the settlement will be in roster limits.
Marshall will see an overall decrease of 44 roster spots, though all athletes will now have financial assistance. In addition, tuition for all athletes will be based on an in-state rate, saving the MU Athletic Department around $200,000.
Some of the new roster limits at Marshall include 105 football players and 15 players each for both basketball programs. Baseball will have a maximum of 34 spots and women’s softball will have 25 roster spots. Both soccer programs can have up to 28 players.
