Two dead and three wounded in Fayette County shooting

MOUNT CARBON, W.Va. — An shooting incident Monday morning in Fayette County left two people dead and three with gunshot wounds.

Fayette County Sheriff Jess McMullen said his deputies were dispatched to a call involving shots fired and a gunman at large in the Mount Carbon community. Along with those deputies members of the State Police, Montgomery City Police, and the Natural Resources Police all responded to the scene.

Investigators upon arrival found the suspected gunman dead in his residence of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Another individual was found dead outside the home under a neighboring carport. McMullen said three more victims were found nearby with minor gunshot wounds. Their injuries were believed to be non-life-threatening and they are being treated.

The area was placed under a shelter-in-place order for a period of time, but authorities say that has now been lifted and there is no longer a threat to the public.

Detectives with the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department continue their investigation into what prompted the gunfire which started about 10:30 a.m. Monday. The names of the individuals involved have not been released.

The Fayette County Sheriff’s Department is asking anyone who has knowledge of the incident or the individuals involved to come forward.
