Longtime UC First Lady Janet Welch dead at 88

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The University of Charleston has announced that former First Lady Dr. Janet Welch died on Saturday at the age of 88.

Dr. Janet Welch

Welch, a Sissonville native, served as the first lady from 1989 until 2018 while her husband, Dr. Ed Welch, led the university.

Welch was known as a staple in the community and “beloved presence” across the UC campus.

Perhaps Welch’s most lasting project is the Erma Byrd West Virginia Women Artists Gallery. The galley features 155 pieces of art from West Virginia women artists.

A release from the university also detailed Welch’s effort in shaping the look and feel of the school’s campus. Welch was heavily involved in working on design layouts, color schemes and other aspects to the campus’ design and art.

Welch was also inducted into the University of Charleston Athletics Hall of Fame in 2012 for being the “Seventh Woman” for the UC volleyball team for years.

A public service for Welch will be held in the Rotunda of the University of Charleston at 5 p.m. Thursday.
