WINFIELD, W.Va. — An elderly Putnam County woman died when she was run over early Thursday morning by her own car.
Putnam County Sheriff Bobby Eggleton said his deputies were called to a home in a Winfield subdivision around 8 a.m. Thursday.
“A neighbor called and said there was somebody laying in Mrs. Gore’s yard beside her driveway. We arrived and discovered it was actually her and she was deceased,” Eggleton explained.
Investigators believed the victim, Rosalee Gore, 78, of Winfield had been to the nearby Dollar General Store Thursday morning. She returned home, but failed to put her car in park before she got out. The car was in neutral and when she exited the vehicle, deputies say the car rolled backward, knocked her down, and rolled over body. She was dead at the scene.
“It’s just a horrific accident,” said Eggleton.
Deputies do not suspect foul play, but since it was an unattended death have sent Mrs. Gore’s body to the state Medical Examiner’s office for autopsy. Eggleton said his department would also review the surveillance footage from the nearby Dollar General store to see if they could narrow down the time of death.
According to the Sheriff, Mrs. Gore was well known in her community and had recently lost her husband.
