Marshall’s regular season match at West Virginia was rather forgetful for the Herd, which suffered a 3-0 loss on Halloween.
MU will have an opportunity to make amends in the near future after it defeated Georgia State 3-1 on Sunday in a Sun Belt Conference Tournament quarterfinal.
The match, played at WVU’s home venue of Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium, came shortly after West Virginia advanced past Old Dominion.
No. 3 seed Marshall and second-seeded WVU will now meet again at 7 p.m. Wednesday with a spot in the Sun Belt final on the line.
In the win over the Panthers, Marshall (10-2-5) struck first in the 17th minute on Takahiro Fujita’s third goal this season.
Less than 1 minute later, however, Georgia State (4-8-6) pulled even on Gavin Williams’ goal.
The Herd went ahead for good with 4 minutes to play in the first half on Joao Roberto’s fourth goal of the year.
Louie Salkeld provided insurance in the 80th minute to help ensure Marshall advanced.
It marked the second 3-1 victory over the Panthers this season for Marshall, which secured the other on October 4 in Huntington.
Top seed Kentucky, which advanced past Coastal Carolina on penalty kicks, will play host to No. 5 seed Central Florida in the other semifinal Wednesday night.
The Sun Belt Championship will be played next Sunday at the higher seed.
