Fatal crash is a double tragedy for two Kanawha County children

HANSFORD, W.Va. — A fatal wreck in eastern Kanawha County is a second major tragedy in the lives of two young girls in recent days.

When Sharon Williams of Hansford was killed in a car wreck on U.S. Route 60 Wednesday night, it left her two elementary age daughters with nobody. Williams’ husband, the girls’ father, died of illness just before Christmas.

Jackie Hersch is the Principal at Pratt Elementary School where the girls are in first and second grade. She said Williams was the kind of parent educators want for their students.

“She always made sure they came to any kind of events we had, whether they were PTO events or Title I events. She was very active in their lives and made sure they were active in any extra-curricular activities that we had,” said Hersch.

The girls were placed into the custody of an Aunt the night their mother was killed by Child Protective Services. One of the little girls was in the car with her mother when she died. She suffered minor injuries in the wreck, but Hersch knows there will be much deeper injuries to the girls which will take much longer to heal.

“Hopefully with the help and support of family, community, and school we can all pull together and help these little girls,” she said.
