CHARLESTON, W.Va. –The state Division of Highways is encouraging motorists to brace for potholes that are coming following the two weeks of frigid temperatures after the snow and ice that swept through the state.
The DOH said in a news release, that once the snow and ice does melt it will show a fresh new crop of potholes on the roads.
Officials said that patching of the potholes will more than likely have to wait until it warms up because of the lack of hot asphalt during the winter months. To fix the pothole, crews have to mill out the road around the existing hole, sweep out all of the debris, lay a sticky layer of tack, pour in a fresh batch of steamy asphalt, and then roll over the pavement to smooth it, which will last the life of the surrounding roadway.
They did say they could use a sticky mixture of cold asphalt known as cold patch in the worst potholes, but this would be only a temporary fix.
