Fire damages Logan Elementary

LOGAN, W.Va. — Logan Elementary School was damaged in a fire that occurred Saturday morning.

The blaze was reported at 10:25 a.m. and spotted by personnel working at nearby Logan High School.

The fire got into the school’s HVAC system and set off the sprinkler system. An office and storage room sustained the most damage. The entire school had some water and smoke damage. Are

Investigators said it appears the fire was electrical in nature.

Logan County Schools released the following statement:

Earlier today at approximately 10:17am, a fire was reported at Logan Elementary School. The school’s fire alarm system activated promptly, and staff were on scene within minutes implementing established safety protocols to secure the building and minimize any damage.

Local emergency responders arrived quickly on the scene and worked efficiently to contain and extinguish the fire.

Logan County Schools is grateful for the swift response of the Logan Fire Department and assisting agencies whose professionalism ensured the situation was brought under control without injury.

There were no students or staff in the building at the time of the fire and there were no injuries during the response.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. School and district officials are working closely with the Logan County Schools maintenance team and the State Fire Marshall to assess the extent of any damage.

Logan County Schools is currently working on a plan to seamlessly transition students to empty classrooms available at Logan Middle School. Students will remain on the island to minimize any disruption to students and their families schedules.

Teachers at Logan Elementary will be contacted by Principal Hillary Nelson regarding when they can get into their classrooms to retrieve personal belongings and other materials.

Security will be on-site around the clock to make sure the building is secured.

If our transition goes according to plan, Logan Middle will host an open house on Friday, February 27th for Logan Elementary parents and their families, allowing them to familiarize themselves with their new, temporary surroundings.

The safety of our students and staff remains our highest priority. Logan County Schools will do everything it can to make this temporary transition as painless as possible for our school community.

Additional information, including plans for the school schedule, will be shared with families as it becomes available.

We appreciate the cooperation and patience of our families and community.
