My favorite two weeks of the year have finally arrived.
Every March in West Virginia, something special happens. The High School Girls’ and Boys’ Basketball Tournaments get underway this morning at the Charleston Civic Center Coliseum and over the next two weeks, 56 games will take place and eight champions will be crowned. It’s more than just basketball. It’s a tradition, a reunion, and a celebration of communities across the Mountain State.
For players, coaches, and fans, reaching Charleston is the dream. It represents months—sometimes years—of dedication. Early morning workouts. Long bus rides through winding mountain roads. Packed high school gyms where entire towns show up wearing school colors. All of it builds toward this moment: the chance to play under the bright lights of the state tournament.
Over the next two weeks, history will be made. Student-athletes have the chance to compete on the state’s biggest stage, representing their entire communities. And that’s what makes this tournament special. In larger states, championships can feel distant or impersonal. Here, it feels like a statewide gathering.
The games rarely disappoint. There could be buzzer beaters, overtime thrillers, underdogs rising, and yes, perhaps a blowout or two, but that is part of the draw. You don’t know what will happen. You never know which player, perhaps someone you never expected, will emerge as the hero.
The joy of getting an opportunity to play in Charleston is juxtaposed with the reality that only eight of the 32 teams that take the floor will go home happy. The remaining teams will be heartbroken in the moment, but over time, the sting of the loss will subside, and players will fondly remember their time at the state tournament.
For the athletes stepping onto the floor, the stage is unforgettable. The lights are brighter, the crowd louder, and the stakes higher than anything they’ve experienced before. Yet it’s also a celebration of everything high school sports are meant to represent—teamwork, perseverance, and community pride.
As the 2026 tournaments arrive, the excitement is already building across West Virginia. Buses will soon arrive at the Charleston Civic Center and Coliseum and fans will pack the arena.
Enjoy the next two weeks as new champions are crowned, former champions defend their titles and new legends are born.
Let’s play some basketball!!
