CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Firefighters confirm that a woman died in a house fire on Charleston’s West Side Tuesday morning.
Crews responded to the fire at 214 Lovell Drive. The blaze was reported at about 9:30 a.m.

Charleston Fire Department Captain David Hodges said the initial 911 call came through activation of a life alert button, then more calls from the neighbors poured in. When crews arrived on the scene, the blaze was upgraded to a structure fire.
“The initial call came in on a medical pendant activation, one of the life alert buttons. As the crews were responding, it was immediately upgraded to a structure fire. There were calls from the neighbors. The house was on fire when they arrived, they went to work quickly. They did discover a female victim that they did remove from the house, unfortunately she did perish in the fire.”
First responders were able to contain the flames to one room. While several rooms sustained damage, the house is not considered a total loss, Hodges said.
Firefighters discovered the female victim as they extinguished the fire.
The victim’s name has not been released.
The Charleston Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of the blaze.
