CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Contractors will begin working Tuesday night to construct two key traffic crossovers in connection with the multi-million dollar deck replacement of the Eugene A. Carter Memorial Bridge and surrounding ramps on Interstate 64 in Charleston.
The crossovers will be constructed between the bridge and the Montrose Drive exit in South Charleston and the Lee Street and the Bigley Avenue interchanges in Charleston.
DOH spokesperson Meghann Ferguson said the work will be done at night.
“They’re not to close or crossover anything during heavy traffic times. They are going to wait until everyone has commuted home from work before they get started,” Ferguson said.
The crossover construction includes of median walls along with patching and paving some traffic can cross-over to the other lanes while the old decks are being removed from the bridge along with the on and off ramps to U.S. Route 119. Fast lanes will be closed during the construction of the crossovers.
Ferguson said motorists need to be aware because traffic patterns could change when they head to work the next morning.
“There will be cones making sure the drivers know exactly which lane to drive in as they cross over,” Ferguson said. “If anyone has been on Montrose the last few months they know those crossovers can get strenuous, so take it slow.”
The Carter Bridge is the busiest in the state carrying nearly 100,000 vehicles over the Kanawha River on a daily basis. The deck replacement project, which will hit full go early next year, is projected to cost about $74 million.
A special website has been developed to help motorists keep up with the project. It can be found at i64forthillbridge.com.
