RALEIGH COUNTY, W.Va. –A former corrections officer at Southern Regional Jail in Raleigh County entered a guilty plea for his role in a conspiracy in which he and other officers used unreasonable force against inmates as a form of punishment and retaliation.
Michael Pack pleaded guilty to one count of violating 18 U.S.C. § 371, which is conspiracy to commit an offense or to defraud the U.S. or any agency.
As part of the plea agreement, Pack stated that he and his co-conspirators would strike, assault, and harm inmates who they believed or perceived to have engaged in misconduct.
Pack explained they would bring the inmates to “blind spots” areas of the jail that weren’t captured on surveillance cameras.
He also admitted they would then create false reports denying their unreasonable uses of force against inmates and failing to document injuries the inmates suffered from because of the use of force incidents.
Pack faces a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000. He will be sentenced on July 24.
