Preliminary report released by MSHA regarding death of coal miner in Marshall County

MARSHALL COUNTY, W.Va. –The Mine Safety and Health Administration has released new information regarding the death of a coal miner from earlier this month in Marshall County.

According to MSHA’s preliminary accident report, Darin Reece, 36, died after he was crushed by a roof support at the Ohio County Mine in Dallas, W.Va. on April 3.

“A miner died after a scoop backed into another scoop that was transporting a longwall shield,” the report said. “The collision caused the longwall shield to shift and pin the miner, who was working underneath it.”

The report has classified the incident as a powered haulage accident.

Reece was a section supervisor who had 18 years of mining experience, the report stated.

MSHA later noted that only 160 out of 400 underground employees were in the mine when the incident occurred. No other injuries were reported.

The investigation of the death remains ongoing.

Reece’s death came less than a day after another mining death, Aaron Warrix, 53, was killed at the Horse Creek Eagle Mine in Raleigh County.
