CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The Kanawha County Sheriff’s Department has identified the man who died in an officer-involved shooting on I-79 near Mink Shoals Thursday evening.

Authorities said David McGuire, 35, of East Bank, was shot dead by law enforcement after a pursuit which resulted in a crash just north of the Mink Shoals exit.
The incident started around 6:20 p.m. Thursday in the Chesapeake community of eastern Kanawha County. Deputies responded to a domestic incident and a deputy was speaking with the victim of the incident. Kanawha County Sheriff Joe Crawford said the woman’s name hasn’t been released, but she was McGuire’s girlfriend. McGuire approached the two from around the house and opened fire. The victim was struck by gunfire and remains in stable condition.
The deputy speaking with the victim was not hit and returned fire. McGuire was able to get to his truck and fled, but the deputy was able to put out a description for other officers in the area. A responding deputy spotted the vehicle on Route 61 between Marmet and Charleston. The suspect led police onto the Turnpike and headed north. After reaching the I-77/64 split he headed north. By this time units from the state police and Charleston Police Department had joined the pursuit.
McGuire lost control and crashed on I-79 just north of the Mink Shoals exit. Crawford said he managed to get out of the wreckage on his own and was armed with a handgun. Crawford said it is believed McGuire fired a shot when he pointed the weapon at responding officers. They returned fire and killed him. No law enforcement officers or bystanders were injured in the incident.
The shooting remains under investigation and after the probe is complete, the case will be forwarded to the Kanawha County Prosecutor’s Office.
Crawford said all three agencies involved will do their own internal review of the officer involved shooting part of the case. Crawford credited training for keeping the deputies engaged and acting professionally amid chaotic circumstances.
