No. 15 West Virginia had already made a resounding statement by winning the first two games of an all-important three-game set at seventh-ranked Kansas.
The Mountaineers weren’t satisfied, however, and showed that Sunday afternoon by handling the Jayhawks 13-2 in an eight-inning contest to complete the sweep at Hoglund Ballpark.
It is the first road ranked series sweep in program history for West Virginia, which improved to 35-12 overall and 19-8 in the Big 12 Conference to pull within one game of KU (37-15, 20-7) in the league standings.
Sean Smith’s two-run home run in the third inning enabled the Mountaineers to erase the lone deficit they faced throughout the weekend and go in front for good at 3-2. It came with two outs after a Kansas error in the inning.

WVU put up a six spot in the sixth to gain a comfortable lead, an inning in which in the visitors managed three hits, including a bases-clearing double from Paul Schoenfeld.
Starting pitcher Dawson Montesa allowed both runs in three innings and had a pitch count of 80 in large part due to issuing four walks.
Reese Bassinger came on to start the home half of the fourth and shutdown Kansas for the next five innings, allowing two hits and striking out four.
It marked the fourth straight loss for KU, which was 21-1 over its previous 22 contests directly before the skid.
WVU welcomes TCU for a three-game series to end the regular season starting Thursday at Kendrick Family Ballpark. The Mountaineers will enter the final weekend in sole possession of second place in the Big 12 and need any combination of four wins/Kansas losses to catch the Jayhawks in the conference race.
KU plays three games at BYU to end its regular season.
A closer look at how the Mountaineers swept the Jayhawks:
- Game 2
WVU broke a 2-all tie in the eighth inning by scoring on a throwing error, then got insurance in the form of Gavin Kelly’s two-run home run in the ninth Saturday on the way to a 5-2 victory.
Pitching was pivotal to the Mountaineers’ success, with starter Chansen Cole allowing two runs on four hits in five innings while striking out six.
Ian Korn relieved Cole and threw four scoreless innings, while allowing two hits with three strikeouts. Cole nor Korn walked a batter.
Schoenfeld hit a first-inning home run to give WVU a 1-0 lead before Kansas’ Tyson LeBlanc matched it in the bottom of the frame, though the Jayhawks never led.
Kansas used five pitchers, issued seven walks and struck out seven Mountaineers.
- Game 1
Behind a complete game from ace Maxx Yehl, the Mountaineers claimed Friday’s season opener, 4-1.
Yehl limited the Jayhawks to six hits, struck out nine and walked two while going the distance for the first time in his career.
It marked the second start for the left-hander second start since a 12-day layoff after he exited early April 18 against Houston with his velocity noticeably down.
Kelly’s home run in the third allowed WVU to lead 1-0, and Tyrus Hall added a solo homer in the ninth for what proved to be the final run of the contest.
Kansas starting pitcher Dominic Voegele allowed three runs on six hits over six innings with 10 strikeouts.
WVU had eight of 14 hits and worked four of six-base-on-balls between the two teams.
Yehl’s effort allowed him to improve to 7-1 while he lowered his Big 12-best ERA to 2.04 for the season.
Since returning from a near two-week recovery break, Yehl has allowed one run on nine hits in 14 innings with 17 strikeouts and four walks.
The Mountaineers are 10-2 this season in games Yehl has pitched in, and he logged five shutout frames in one of those two losses back on March 1 at Kennesaw State.
